During the war of independence lead by Prince Ferenc Rákóczy II (1703-11) the town played a central role. Rákóczy had his general headquarters in Miskolc, both in 1704 and 1706. The town became the centre of military operations and the scene of important political decisions as well.
The council of the government of the Kuruts war of independence was holding its meetings permanently in the first months of 1704, and they led the army from there to occupy Eger. At the Prince's headquarters in the noble estates at Aszaly and Dőry, they could receive the delegates of Poland and the Netherlands, French officers of the engineer corps, and experts of artillery during this period.
Besides military expenses, the inhabitants of Miskolc had to face two catastrophes. The Austrians plundered and burnt the town, and in 1710-1711 almost the half of the population, six thousand people, died of the plague.
